If you have wireless capabilities on your laptop you need a signal to make it work, much like a mobile phone. The WiFi detector will find these hotspot 802.11b/g signals within 300 feet. Simply push the button and hold it down to activate the seeker. The 4 LED lights will scan back and forth looking for signal. If signal is found, the lights will stay on.
